Summary
The unprecedented global health crisis triggered by COVID-19 has affected travel markets and consumer behavior worldwide. Across Europe, travel segments contracted sharply in 2020, in stark contrast with the expansive growth experienced in previous years. Leisure travelers took fewer trips and average household travel spend declined significantly, though trip type, purchases and attitudes often varied by traveler demographic.
In France, travel frequency dipped noticeably in 2020; nearly one third of travelers took three or more trips pre-pandemic, compared to less than one in four in 2020. Still, travel and tourism remain a high priority purchase for consumers. This report, based on a comprehensive survey of past French travelers and those who planned to travel in 2021, explores French consumers’ trip-planning and purchasing behavior, including the impact of the pandemic on their 2020 travel and their attitudes toward travel in 2021 and beyond.
